What's in a name?
So that is a very good question...how did we come up with the name Solid Rock Race Timing?  In Matthew 16:16-18 the Bibles says "Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."  And Jesus said to him, "Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.  I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of Hades will not over power it."

The word for Peter, Petros, means a small stone.  However, the word Petra means a foundation boulder.  Jesus was using a play on words here, basically saying that a boulder-like truth came from the mouth of one who was called a small stone.  Jesus was saying that He was going to build His church on the same faith and truth that Peter demonstrated in his response to Jesus' question in prior verses.  

That is our desire as well.  We want to build our business and ministry upon the same faith and truth that Peter and Jesus proclaimed in these verses.  So that is where the "Solid Rock" comes from in our business names.

What is Solid Rock Race Timing?

That's also a very good question...what exactly is Solid Rock Race Timing all about?  To be honest, God dealt with me for years about doing something for Him, something out of the ordinary, something more than what would just fit into my life.  It seemed like every sermon, Sunday School lesson and other messages I heard were asking me to stretch myself, get out of my comfort zone, do something for God that might actually cost me something.  Finally, toward the end of 2012 and the beginning of 2013, I finally began to listen to Him.  

The other aspect relates to our own family situation.  Our son has some special needs, so we were also looking for ways to better prepare ourselves to provide for his future as well.  My wife and I began discussing it a little and it just seemed like God was opening up doors and paths that were leading us right to where we are today.  So we decided to be obedient to God and in February, 2013 made the decision to start our business/ministry which is Solid Rock Race Timing.  It is a Christian-based, family focused, for profit organization, which we hope will provide a multitude of services and products to our community as we grow and serve under God's leadership.  

The first opportunity that has presented itself is race timing.  When Shoals TRAC announced that it would no longer be timing races beginning in 2013, it was as if God took a bulldozer and cleared the way forward for us.  I had already been investigating and doing some initial discussions with chip timing companies before we were aware of TRAC's decision, so when we heard what they had decided, it just confirmed that this was something God wanted us to do.  In early February, 2013 we placed our order with Innovative Timing Systems for our very own RFID Jaguar chip timing system.  Since that time we have been blessed to meet some many great people through these events.  In 2013 we timed 32 events, in 2014 we timed about 60 events, in 2015 we timed 80 events.  This year, 2016, we are poised to partner with even more events.    

We will also continue to explore other areas such as concerts, special events, conferences and other recreational/sports related activities that we can use to promote God, Christian principles and a focus on the family.  Having a son with some special needs has made us very conscience about the lack of sports related opportunities for these kids and their families.  Through the years we have had the opportunity to work with some of the kids through Upward Basketball programs.  They love sports and playing sports just like every other child and deserve to have the same opportunities.  We are exploring how to best make these opportunities available to families and kids in our area, so they can have the same experiences as their friends and peers, but in an atmosphere and setting more conducive to them.  We can't wait to see what God might have in store for us and you in this area!

Finally, we can't do all of this alone.  We continue to look to partner with other business and organizations when possible.  We want to leverage the good that is already going on in our area.  We will also be looking to sponsor different charities and causes along the way.  Just as we need help, we realize that there are others in our world who also need help.  

We hope this gives you a little better idea of who we are and what we are about.  To be honest, we are not sure where God is leading us or what all he has planned, but it will be fun to find out.  So please continue on this journey with us.
